    Default Unreliable narrators

Can you give examples of books with unreliable narrators and explain why they are unreliable?

    Thanks

    Just a question.

No, I am just interested in the idea of unreliable narrators, and I want to have a better and fuller understanding of them.

A book I'm doing a novel study for: Catherine, Called Birdy.

Catherine has a biased view of her life, and does not know what everyone is thinking.

Humbert Humbert in Lolita is one of the most famous. Not only does his love for pre-pubescent girls color his narration, but he has occasional bouts with insanity throughout the book (a common theme in Nabokov novels) so that it becomes hard to separate his impressions from fact. There are times when it seems that his extreme paranoia is just due to madness, but sometimes his paranoia turns out to be justified.

The narrator of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a patient in an insane asylum. He's paranoid, has hallucinations, etc--I'd say that makes him a little unreliable! This is one of my favorite books. Another one is the narrator in Edgar Alan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart." He tells the reader right away that he isn't insane...that's always a good hint!

That's the best example I can think of.

I would add the narrator in "The Good Soldier" by Ford Maddox Ford - an excellent short novel that most people have not heard of.
